What’s the role

The Shell Sarnia team is seeking an Advanced Process Control Engineer (APC) to join our Process Automation Control & Optimization (PACO) Team within the Technology Department.

This team member will provide engineering support, troubleshooting and maintenance of APC applications to various process units at the Sarnia Manufacturing Centre.

Shell Sarnia currently operates under a Hybrid work model, where flexibility to work from home is available.

This is a hands-on role requiring on-site presence approximately three days per week.

 Accountabilities:

  • Apply Chemical Engineering analysis to optimize the operating facilities

  • Provide day-to-day APC support for improved unit profitability and stability

  • Identify unit operation constraints and reliability risks and to determine cost effective solutions.

    Conduct benefit and cost studies for yield shift, variability reduction and energy savings

  • Design and implement APC for profitability, energy, stability, and environmental improvements.

    The APC applications include but are not limited to Yokogawa PACE, RQE and data analysis

  • Track KPI's for APC and ensure they are regularly updated & reported

  • Work closely with key stakeholders to ensure APC projects are advocated and benefits are supported

  • Design, modify and tune base layer controls relevant to APC and Advanced Applications

  • Incorporate relevant APC and Advanced Application information into operating procedures

  • Work closely with the Process Engineering team to support management of the Process

  • Collaborate with the other PACO disciplines to manage the Distributed Control System (DCS) and APC control

  • Work closely with Production team to maintain unit performance as needed

  • Contribute control input to capital project development as needed

  • Provide control support to ISU, T/A, HAZOP, and risk assessments as needed

  • Responsible for Operator training for APC and Advanced Applications

  • Support engineering and construction contractor (EPCM) activities during construction phases of projects, and act as a point of contact for the main automation contractor (MAC) with respect to control narrative review and factory acceptance testing

  • Support the activities of Operations during the commissioning and start-up period

  • Assist in defining the requirements of new minor and major control projects

  • Configure DCS (Honeywell Experion PKS/Foxboro IA) to implement new process control/APC strategies

What you bring

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Must have a post-secondary degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Control Engineering, or a related field

  • At least 3+ years of experience as a Process Control Engineer in the oil/gas or resource processing industry

  • Familiarity with APC software such as Yokogawa PACE, Aspen DMC, and/or process modelling software would be an asset

  • Experience in troubleshooting Process Control problems and providing operational guidance and engineering solutions

  • Knowledge of Controls Systems, Honeywell PKS and Foxboro IA would be an asset

  • Must be willing to provide occasional off-hours support during upsets, outages, turnarounds, and emergencies when needed
