Description:

The Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in Chinese language.

The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, or a Master’s degree with at least 5 years of teaching experience, in Chinese language (e.g., linguistics, applied linguistics, language pedagogy), or a related area.

Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching.

We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing department strengths.

Candidates must have experience teaching Chinese language at all levels in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures.

Familiarity with North American pedagogical approaches is required.

Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

About the Department The Department of East Asian Studies is a multidisciplinary humanities department with established expertise in the histories, societies and cultures of East Asia.

The department is home to an extremely popular undergraduate program and is strongly committed to graduate training.

The department houses three in-demand language programs—Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Language enrolments are growing and reflect the diverse populations that inhabit the city of Toronto.

In addition, the University of Toronto’s global appeal attracts a large number of international students who participate in our language programs.
