Purpose of the Position

The NWU Desmond Tutu School of Medicine is being established on the Potchefstroom Campus aimed to accommodate the first cohort of MBChB students from 2028.

The School is divided into four areas: MBChB Programme; Clinical Specialities and Sub-Specialities; Research; FHS/FNAS Special Projects.

The MBChB Programme is divided into three distinctive phases: Foundational Phase (1-18 months) with a strong focus on Biomedical Sciences; Intermediate Phase (18-36 months) with a strong focus on Integrated Pathology and Clinical Pharmacology; Clinical Phase (36-72 months) with a strong focus on Clinical Rotations.

The MBChB Programme is a 6-year, integrated, spiral curriculum.

The Senior Lecturer in Chemical Pathology will function predominantly in the Intermediate Phase in Integrated Pathology and will also be responsible for service delivery in the Centre for Human Metabolomics.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master of Medicine degree in Clinical Pathology (NQF level 9).

  • An MBChB or equivalent – Bachelor’s in Medicine and Surgery (NQF level 8).

  • Registration with the HPCSA.

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ relevant work experience in a medical education field related to chemical pathology within the context of an MBChB (or related undergraduate medicine programme).

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ evidence of experience in the management of a chemical pathology laboratory.

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ evidence of independence and initiative in research, technical work, and innovative teaching strategies.

Added Advantage & Preference

  • A PhD in Clinical Pathology (NQF level 10).

  • Evidence of postgraduate student supervision.

  • Evidence of research outputs.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

MBChB Teaching

  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.

  • Initiation and development of subject material.

  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.

  • Supervision of the program of study of honours/master’s students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work
  • Teaching activities include initiation and development of unit materials and may include the supervision of honours/ master’s research students.

  • The supervision of honours and research students and where appropriate the leadership of research teams.

    They may display a high level of administrative work.

  • Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior employees.

  • Marking and assessment.

  • Consultation with students.

Research and Service Delivery

  • Supervision of major Honours/Masters or postgraduate research projects.

  • The conduct of research.

  • Involvement in professional activity.

  • Service delivery related to the Centre for Human Metabolomics.

Key Functional/Technical Competencies

  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Teams, email and internet.

  • Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.

  • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and wellbeing.

  • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.

  • Expected to be involved in the development of and have responsibility for curricula and programmes of study (award courses).

  • Proficiency in English is essential and knowledge in an official language will be recommended.

  • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.

  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.

  • The ability to function well individually and as part of a team/subject group
  • Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as ability to be self-driven.

Remuneration

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
