Job description

Overview

Glencore’s Human Resources team in Johannesburg, South Africa is seeking a motivated Data Engineer to drive the evolution of our HR Data Platform.

The role integrates data from multiple HR and payroll systems into an enterprise HR data platform and develops robust data products.

Responsibilities

The Data Engineer will take end‑to‑end ownership of data pipelines and the Azure environment that supports them – designing, building and maintaining automated workflows using Alteryx and Azure services, optimising Blob Storage and Azure SQL, and ensuring high standards of data quality and reliability.

Working closely with HR and the wider business, you will translate compliance and reporting requirements into sustainable, scalable solutions while establishing best practices, operational playbooks and a solid framework for future growth.

Qualifications

  • •Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field; a Master’s degree is advantageous, combined with 3 to 6 years of experience in data engineering projects.

  • •Proficiency in SQL and Python – solid experience in at least one, with the ability and interest to apply both to data extraction, transformations, automation and potential re‑engineering of workflows.

  • •Experienced background in relational modelling and schema design, with experience creating, designing and optimising relational databases.

  • •Practical experience building and maintaining automated data workflows in Alteryx or a similar orchestration framework (e.g. Apache Airflow; Azure Data Factory; Data Bricks).

  • •Practical knowledge of cloud data ecosystems and an eagerness to deepen expertise – preference for Azure, while experience with AWS, GCP, Snowflake or similar is also valuable.

  • •Good grasp of the data product lifecycle – from requirements gathering and design through development, testing, deployment and ongoing operations.

  • •Ability to analyse business requirements and translate them into robust, well‑documented data solutions.

Ideal candidate

  • •Familiarity with HR and payroll data structures or similar sensitive, regulated data domains.

  • •Experience with reporting and analytics tools such as Power BI.

  • •Awareness of data governance and privacy standards.

  • •Broader cloud administration knowledge, such as RBAC management, role assignments and privilege reviews, application/database patching, cost monitoring and resource health.

  • •Exposure to modern data architecture concepts such as data Lakehouse, medallion architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold), or data mesh.

  • •Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
