System Analyst Developer: Business Intelligence - Department of Information Technology Services

Apply to the System Analyst Developer: Business Intelligence position at University of Pretoria.

The role is within the Department of Information Technology Services and will work closely with business stakeholders to develop and support BI solutions.

Job Purpose

The position is responsible for planning, designing, developing, implementing, and integrating Business Intelligence (BI) solutions.

It will support and maintain the BI system, ensuring compliance with policies, standards, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Business Intelligence design and development:
    • Gather and analyse BI reporting requirements from relevant stakeholders.

    • Translate business needs into functional and technical design specifications.

    • Assist functional users in formulating business cases for desired developments or enhancements.

    • Perform data analysis to determine necessary data structures to support business requirements.

    • Design, develop, and test ETL/ELT processes to ensure data is available for BI analysis and reporting.

    • Ensure system compliance with audit requirements where applicable.

    • Ensure prescribed procedures for system error registration and change approval are followed before implementation.

  • User support:
    • Provide support to stakeholders in specific domains.

    • Assist in developing end‑user training material and conduct training sessions.

    • Collaborate and share knowledge with stakeholders.

    • Identify trends in production problems, manage root causes, and implement preventative measures.

    • Attend to incidents, requests, and problems on the enterprise service management platform.

  • Systems maintenance and upgrades:
    • Monitor releases of patches, bundles, and maintenance packs from product vendors.

    • Contribute to knowledge sharing of bundles and upgrades with stakeholders.

    • Develop and test cut‑over/transition strategies to ensure business continuity.

    • Advise management on changes to architecture, infrastructure, or strategies to improve DWH/BI governance.

    • Ensure optimal system performance.

    • Schedule and manage daily, weekly, and monthly ETL/ELT routines.

    • Perform day‑to‑day system administration, resolve problems, and maintain defined processes.

  • Team management / mentorship:
    • Ensure team activities comply with architecture, standards, and procedures.

    • Guide and mentor team members to enhance performance.

    • Establish effective communication channels with stakeholders.

    • Facilitate regular meetings with team and stakeholders to meet milestones.

    • Mentor BI power users to design, configure, and maintain queries, reports, and dashboards.

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualification: Bachelor’s degree or BTech (e.g., B.Sc., B.Com Informatics, B.Eng.).

  • Four years’ experience in:
    • Design, development, deployment, and maintenance of Business Intelligence systems.

    • SQL queries, especially with Oracle and SQL Server.

    • Working with users and providing user support.

  • OR
  • Applicable IT‑related three‑year Diploma (e.g., National Diploma in Computer Science, Diploma in Information Technology) and six years’ experience in:
    • Design, development, deployment, and maintenance of Business Intelligence systems.

    • SQL queries, especially with Oracle and SQL Server.

    • Working with users and providing user support.

Required Competencies

  • Knowledge:
    • Experience with different technology data sources.

    • Oracle Data Integrator.

    • Reporting and analytics.

    • SQL.

    • Data modelling / dimensional modelling.

    • Understanding of relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices.

  • Technical competencies:
    • Translating user business requirements into system design specifications and queries, reports, and dashboards.

    • Managing and optimising the Data Warehouse / BI application performance.

    • Operating a business intelligence platform using SQL and ETL processes.

    • Designing STAR schemas, data cleansing, transformation, and aggregation.

    • Troubleshooting within an IT software environment.

  • Behavioural competencies:
    • Identify issues, obtain relevant information, and propose alternative solutions.

    • Present information effectively to individuals or groups.

    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.

    • Provide guidance and feedback to improve employee performance.

    • Follow instructions and perform routine tasks accurately.

    • Collaborate and support teamwork.

    • Stay current with technical developments and trends.

    • Utilise office equipment and software to meet business needs.

    • Resolve problems and act proactively to achieve goals.

    • Adhere to ethical principles and organisational norms.

Added Advantages And Preferences

  • A relevant Honours’ degree (e.g., B.Sc., B.Com Informatics, B.Eng.) and:
    • Four years’ experience in reports/analytical tools or Oracle products relating to Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence.

    • Deployment of Oracle OBIEE / OBIA / OAS applications.

    • Various ETL/ELT industry standard tools.

    • Data warehousing/BI troubleshooting and problem resolution.

    • Experience within a Higher Education environment.

  • Business intelligence certification.

  • Oracle Fusion Middleware certification.

  • Oracle Business Intelligence, Oracle Data Integrator (ODI), PL/SQL.

  • Business Analysis.

  • ITIL certification.

  • Testing certification.
